Frequently asked questions
Memorial jewelry carries a tangible piece of a loved one, something that represents their physical presence. Through my inlay techniques, I can subtly incorporate cremated ashes, hair, even fur or breast milk into the piece.
Although rings are often chosen for memorial jewelry, I can also design pendants/necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and memorial coins.
I work in solid 14K and 18K gold in your choice of color: yellow, white, or rose gold. I do not offer gold-plated or vermeil jewelry, as the plating wears off over time. That’s why I exclusively use solid 14K and 18K gold.
I can incorporate both cremated and water-cremated ashes into a design. Additionally, I work with hair, fur, and even breast milk.
The entire production process takes place in my atelier. Please allow a minimum of 4 to 8 weeks for a personalized piece. If you choose to have your jewelry engraved, please allow an additional 3 weeks for production.
On average, only a small pinch of ash or a few strands of hair are used in a piece. If you bring or send the ashes to the atelier, three teaspoons will be more than enough. Any remaining ashes or other keepsakes that are not used in the piece will, of course, be returned to you along with your jewelry.
There are two ways to provide ashes.
You can bring the memorial material during a visit to the atelier. I will then fill the jewelry during your visit. Once the piece is finished, you can collect both the jewelry and the remaining memorial material from the atelier.
Alternatively, I can send you and return the completed jewelry and memorial material by post. If you’ve ordered online, I will send you a memorial material shipping kit. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions included and return the kit. I’ll notify you as soon as I receive the material.
The filling process is carried out with great care in the atelier, in a calm and focused environment. Currently, you cannot be present during this process.
When you place an order, the piece is made especially for you. I don’t keep any jewelry in stock. However, I do have photos in the shop of existing designs as well as pieces created in collaboration with clients.
I only need about one teaspoon of ashes for the piece, and often some ashes remain. I return the leftover ashes to you in a secure, labeled package along with your jewelry. You’re also welcome to pick up the remaining ashes at the atelier if you prefer.
Crafting memorial jewelry is a meticulous and labor-intensive process. Therefore, it is unfortunately not possible for you to be present while I create a memorial piece for you. However, you are most welcome to visit my atelier to drop off the cremation ashes, breast milk, or other materials, and together we can select a design and discuss your preferences. Please contact me in advance via email at info@luyendykjewelry.nl to schedule a visit.
Breastmilk jewelry
The average delivery time for a design from the webshop is between 4 and 8 weeks.
For creating a piece of jewelry with breast milk, I require approximately 10 ml of breast milk.
There are two ways to provide your breast milk:
- In-person delivery: You can bring your breast milk during a visit to the studio.
- Shipping kit: If you order your jewelry online, you can request a shipping kit during checkout. The kit will be sent to you free of charge. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions included and return the kit to us at no cost. You will be notified as soon as we have received your material.
The jewelry is filled with great care in the studio, ensuring a calm and precise process. At this time, you are not able to be present during the filling.
Every mother produces unique milk, sometimes richer in protein, sometimes higher in fat, more watery, or sweeter. Its composition also changes depending on the stage of breastfeeding. As a result, color, thickness, and shade of breast milk can vary significantly from person to person.
I work with a carefully prepared mixture of breast milk, a preservative, and resin. This combination ensures that the final piece is strong and durable. During this process, the stones often become slightly lighter in color than the original milk, but they maintain their beauty for a long time.
Yes, you can use breast milk that is fresh, stored, or thawed.
No, it is not necessary to send the breast milk refrigerated.
Jewelry pieces made with ashes, breast milk, or other memorial materials set in resin are water-resistant. However, despite being water-resistant, it is strongly advised not to swim, shower, bathe, or wash dishes while wearing them. Water can contain chemicals, such as soap, chlorine, or salt, that may damage or discolor the resin. Chlorinated water and seawater are particularly harmful to all types of jewelry.
Any damage caused by contact with water is not covered under the warranty.
Creating a memorial piece of jewelry is a careful and labor-intensive process. For this reason, it is unfortunately not possible to be present while I make a memorial jewelry piece or keepsake for you.
However, you are very welcome to visit my studio to drop off ashes, breast milk, or other materials, and to select a piece of jewelry with me while discussing your wishes. Please contact me in advance by email at info@luyendykjewelry.nl.
If you have a surplus, I can temporarily store an extra amount of unused breast milk for you. This way, if something happens to your jewelry in the near future, I can assist you quickly.
If you let me know in advance that you may want a second piece made in the future, I can store the milk for up to six months.
I do recommend that you always keep a small amount of breast milk frozen as a backup, just in case.
I treat the breast milk with a special drying process that helps preserve its color and minimize discoloration. However, keep in mind that resin can develop a warm, creamy glow over time due to exposure to UV light. This is a natural effect and is part of the material: it doesnotmean that the stone is turning yellow.
